Diablo's Hidden Message

"How evil is the Devil?"

Diablo is a legendary video game that defined the action RPG genre. Developed by Blizzard North and released by Blizzard Entertainment in the distant 1997, it keeps being extremely popular up to this day. Its dark scenario drags the player into a world full of chaos and decay, bringing him face to face with the Lord of all evil: Diablo himself. But, we’re not here to talk about its engaging story nor its addictively good gameplay. We’re here to reveal a secret message that is hidden inside Diablo.

So, let’s get down to brass tacks!

When players enter the game’s final level, they come across Diablo. Diablo starts talking and mumbling in an incomprehensible, obscure, and creepy language that doesn’t seem to make any sense. Or, that’s what you think! *wink wink*

In reality, it is a backmasked message, and it makes perfect sense if you listen to it backward. It’s worth pointing out that backmasked messages were a huge thing in the Heavy Metal music industry back in the 80s and 90s. Thus, considering the fact that Diablo’s music is influenced by Heavy Metal, a backmasked message doesn’t seem so weird to exist.

In the 80s and 90s, the hidden messages behind Heavy Metal songs were accused of including satanic themes, such as anti-Christian or pro-Satanism content, or even phrases that would encourage suicide. So, in a game where you’re facing Diablo himself, how heinous and sinister will the backmasked message be?

Alas! If only you could play the audio backward, you would hear the Diablo’s apocryphal message to the audience:

"Eat your vegetables, and brush after every meal!"
