8th Generation Offline Co-op Video Games

Cutting to the chase, it is worth mentioning how video games in the past used to be addressed to two or more players, being more group-friendly. Obscure, The Adventures of Cookie and Cream, LotR: The Return of the King… The list of co-op titles could be enormous. However, conditions have now changed and the developing companies prefer to provide multiplayer capability mainly through the internet.

This has numerous of positive elements, such as the unlimited amount of online players or how everyone can participate in the game from his own, personal space. On the other hand, though, it is necessary to possess at least two consoles and a subscription, in order to join in.

That is a smart business plan, which aims primarily in sales increasement, and secondarily to the player’s facilitation.

So that is the reason why the following list will contain some of the few non sports, racing or fighting co-op video games, that have been released in the recent years for the new console generation and can be played offline.

So, don’t waste a minute! Invite your friends over and make your pick.

A Way Out

A Way Out was released in 2018 and is an action/ adventure game, created by Hazelight Studios. It doesn’t offer a single-player mode, since it aims exclusively at co-op gaming. Its interesting story revolves around Leo and Vincent, two inmates, who struggle to escape prison in order to seek revenge from their enemies. The game requires teamwork and synchronization, since the two main characters need to join forces in order to proceed. The controls are convenient, while the soundtrack and the voice acting deserve a special citation. It is undeniable that a lot of thought was put into creating this amazing game. It contains a great scenario and the backstories of the protagonists will fill you with intense feelings, making you unable to move your eyes away from the screen. So, do yourself a favor and give it a try as soon as possible. It won’t let you down!

Broforce

Have you ever wondered what Super Mario would look like if, instead of being a plumber, was an American commando? No?? Well, the Free Lives team wondered, and decided to answer this question by creating an epic video game, that looks like the baby of Rambo and Mario -no kidding! Broforce is a legendary side-scrolling run-and-gun game, which offers the opportunity for offline co-op mode. But be prepared! You should wear your nostalgia goggles before playing it, since it’s full of 2D fun and pleasant remembrances (oh! And bullets -MANY bullets). Even though it was released in 2015, I guarantee that it will take you back in time, entertaining you like there’s no tomorrow. Give it a chance!

The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan

The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan was released in 2019 by Supermassive Games. It contains horror, survival and drama elements, while its plot revolves around a group of people who gets trapped in a haunted ship. There, their nightmares come to life... However, you need to know that this game is more about the story and less about action, while the player’s choices affect the outcome of the scenario. Even though it reminds more of a film than a video game, I can’t help but recommend it. After all, it presents pure terror through an unusual perspective and it offers an offline co-op mode, so you can get terrified next to your friends!

 LittleBigPlanet 3

LittleBigPlanet 3 is an action-platformer video game, released in 2014 by Sumo Digital. It emphasizes on creativity and is a bit reminiscent of classic and favorite side-scrolling games. It gives the player the opportunity to create their own characters, levels and power-ups. Plus, through the offline co-op mode, you can have fun with a friend and form the virtual world that suits you. After all, the games that belong to the sandbox subcategory are famous for the countless options they offer. Give it a try!

Available on the following platforms: PS3, PlayStation 4

Unravel Two

My opinion on Unravel Two could be summarized in just one sentence: So cute that it hurts! Though it can’t be so small, so allow me to elaborate more. Unravel Two, developed by the Swedish studio Coldwood Interactive, got released in 2018 and is a linear adventure/ puzzle video game. Its story revolves around two adorable little creatures made of yarn, which explore the world around them and help, in their own special way, to change the course of history. The setting is beautiful, the graphics are satisfying, while the teeny-tiny size of the protagonists, which makes the surrounding objects appear much bigger, adds an extra dose of magic. Unravel Two has a low difficulty level -except for some mini levels that’ll test your patience. Plus, it can be played in co-op mode, so you can have fun and cooperate with a friend of yours. So, give this dreamy game a chance!
